What is Evaporative Cooling?

Evaporative coolers use evaporation to help cool the air. Based on the principles of evaporation, hot and dry outside air is pumped through water-infused cooling pads. As the air is pushed through the cooling pads, the water evaporates and the heat in the air absorbed, which lowers the air temperature. A fan then pushes the cool air throughout the home via a network of ducts.

Evaporative cooling in Melbourne is much cheaper to operate than reverse cycle ducted air conditioning, but it not as effective as reverse cycle air conditioning on humid days or in humid climates. Air from an evaporative cooler is not recycled so a window or door should be left open to allow the warm air to be replaced by cooler air brought into the house from the evaporative cooler.

Benefits of Evaporative Cooling

There’s never been a better time to invest in an evaporative air conditioner which is simple to maintain and operate and offers superior product performance.  With energy prices escalating and Australian summers typically involving heat waves, evaporative cooling offers a significant and increasing edge on reverse cycle, when it comes to energy efficiency, healthier air flow, performance, and lifestyle.

Our Melbourne evaporative cooling options all have the follow benefits:

Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality

Australians spend between 80 to 100% of their time indoors, either at work or at home5, which demonstrates how important Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is, when it comes to your own health and well-being, your ability to concentrate, learn, to be energetic and productive. Exposure to poor air quality for extended periods can lead to severe health problems.

IAQ and ventilation is a high priority for buildings and work spaces under the building code, so it should also be taken seriously in the home environment, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of you and your family!

Evaporative Cooling FAQs

How does evaporative cooling actually work?

Evaporative cooling mimics nature’s own air conditioning! It works by drawing warm, dry air through water-soaked pads. As the water evaporates, it cools the air down. This cooler, slightly more humid air is then blown into your home, giving you a refreshing breeze.

Is evaporative cooling suitable for all Australian climates?

Evaporative cooling works best in Australia’s hot and dry inland and summer conditions. In areas with very high humidity, like along the coast during certain times, its cooling effect might be less noticeable. However, for most of the country during summer, it’s a fantastic option.

How is evaporative cooling different from a refrigerated air conditioner?

The main difference is how they cool. Air conditioners use refrigerants to chill the air, which uses more electricity and can make the air very dry. Evaporative coolers use water evaporation, which is more energy-efficient and adds a bit of moisture to the air, making it feel more natural and comfortable in dry heat.

Do I need to keep windows open when using an evaporative cooler?

Yes, you absolutely do! Unlike air conditioners, evaporative coolers need fresh air to work effectively. Keeping a window or door slightly open allows the warm, stale air to escape, ensuring a constant flow of cool, fresh air into your home.

How often do I need to maintain my evaporative cooler?

Regular checks are important. You’ll need to top up the water tank regularly. It’s also a good idea to clean the tank and pads every few weeks, especially in dusty areas. For best performance and longevity, an annual service is recommended, and the pads will likely need replacing every 3 to 7 years, depending on the quality.

Are evaporative coolers expensive to run?

Not at all! Evaporative coolers are significantly more energy-efficient than refrigerated air conditioners. They mainly use a fan and a small water pump, meaning your electricity bills will be much lower. They do use some water, but the overall running costs are very budget-friendly.
